The incident unfolded in the 2100 block of Georgia Avenue at Wildwood Drive on November 14, at about 3:30 p.m.
Authorities say 55-year-old Leland Smith was driving while intoxicated when his vehicle veered onto a sidewalk and struck the 17-year-old victim, who was walking home from school.
The teen, who suffered critical injuries, was rushed to an area hospital. On Friday morning, officials confirmed that the victim's family had made a decision to take her off life support.
Smith was initially charged with intoxication assault following his arrest. On Monday, November 20, ABC13 reported that the charge has been upgraded to murder. He was transported to Harris County Jail on Friday and is being held on $100,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court on Monday, November 27.
