HOUSTON, TX -- Authorities have arrested a 43-year-old man following a hit-and-run crash Saturday afternoon in north Houston that killed a United States Postal Service worker, reports KHOU11.
Houston Police said the fatal incident unfolded in the area of Julia Street and Bauman Road, at about 3:00 p.m.
Preliminary details indicate the suspect, Jesus Natividad Gutierrez, crashed a SUV into the back of a USPS truck ahead of him while trying to get around it.
The victim, a USPS worker who was operating the mail truck, was ejected in the impact of the crash. Authorities said he was thrown into a nearby ditch, where he was pinned by the truck.
Multiple witnesses attempted to render aid to the victim, but he succumbed to his injuries while en route to a local hospital. Officials have since identified him as 29-year-old Robert Jones.
A group of the people who rushed to the victim's aid also attempted to stop the driver of the SUV, but the suspect fled the scene.
On Tuesday, October 3, HPD officials said they arrested the suspect now identified as Gutierrez. He has since been charged with "failure to stop and render aid/accident involving death," as well as for "filing a false police report."
