HARRIS COUNTY, TX -- A 19-year-old motorcyclist died early Monday near north Houston after being struck by a stolen vehicle driven by another teen, according to ABC13.
The fatal incident unfolded where the Interstate 45 feeder road intersects with FM-1960, in the Westfield area. It was first reported by Houston Police shortly after 3:30 a.m.
Authorities say that at about 2:08 a.m., officers witnessed two vehicles racing each other on I-45 near Gulfbank Road. When one officer entered the highway and called for assistance, the suspect, who was in a Kia, sped northbound at rates of speed exceeding 100 mph. The officer continued to pursue the Kia, and nearly six minutes later, the suspect took the exit at FM-1960.
At one point, the Kia sped through the red light at the intersection and struck the motorcyclist, who was traveling eastbound on FM-1960.
Authorities said the Kia only appeared to come to a stop about half a mile down the feeder road because of vehicle damage.
The involved officer reportedly stopped pursuing the suspect and immediately administered CPR to the teen motorcyclist, but the victim died from his injuries at the scene.
While the suspect fled the scene on foot, he was later apprehended and transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.
Following the event, the Kia was confirmed to have been stolen, and per department policy, the involved officer is expected to be placed on administrative duty.
At this time, an investigation by the Harris County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office remain underway. Officials say the teen suspect may face felony murder charges.
