HOUSTON, TX -- Three people, including a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy, were hit and seriously hurt by a work truck Thursday morning on Interstate 10 in east Houston, reports ABC13.

The incident unfolded in the 16400 block of eastbound I-10 (East Freeway) in the Marwood area, west of Beltway 8.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the 38-year-old deputy had responded to the area at about 6:48 a.m. for a minor crash between an SUV and another vehicle. The deputy, who had positioned her patrol vehicle to block the scene along the freeway's inside shoulder, where she was standing with the two men involved in the wreck.

Shortly after, a large work truck, which was towing a bobcat on a gooseneck trailer, appeared to have emerged from an overpass when it approached slightly downhill toward the area. It collided with the patrol car and entered the crash scene, striking all three pedestrians.

While Life Flight was initially expected to transport the deputy and one of the men to Memorial Hermann Hospital, they were ultimately taken to the facility via ambulance due to a Dense Fog Advisory in the area.

The deputy, who was reportedly dragged about 75 to 100 feet after being struck, suffered at least one broken bone and other leg injuries. She was listed in serious but fair condition and is expected to survive.

Officials said the other man who was also taken to Memorial Hermann was hospitalized for more serious injuries below the chest, which primarily include a number of broken bones. He is also expected to survive, but his injuries may require a longer recovery period.

The third victim, who was transported to a separate hospital, was listed in good condition.

Authorities continue to investigate. While impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash, speed is believed to have contributed. No pending charges have been reported at this time.
