Texas homeowners, especially those who live in coastal regions, must be aware of the looming threat posed by hurricanes. Hurricane season often leaves massive property damage in its wake, but the right insurance coverage can provide an important form of risk mitigation.

We recommend Texas homeowners take time to review the different types of hurricane insurance coverage available to them. Don’t hesitate to contact our insurance attorneys here at McLaurin Law with any questions.

What is Hurricane Insurance?

If you live in a coastal region, you need hurricane insurance to protect your home and its contents from the damaging effects of wind and rain.

The average homeowner’s insurance policy includes some level of protection against hurricane damage, but often, this coverage is limited and inadequate.

When we talk about hurricane insurance, we’re not referring to a specific type of policy but, rather, a package of insurance products that can provide extra coverage for windstorm damage. For homeowners who live in hurricane-prone areas, this extra coverage can be a critical form of risk mitigation and provide financial protection.

Does Texas Require Hurricane Insurance?

It’s worth noting that the Lone Star State does not require homeowners to carry any type of hurricane coverage. With that said, many mortgage lenders do require homeowners in coastal areas to pay for additional windstorm coverage, as this is a key means of safeguarding the financial investment in the home.

Types of Hurricane Insurance to Consider

Specifically, mortgage lenders might require borrowers to invest in one or more of the following types of insurance coverage.

  • Windstorm Coverage. For homeowners along the coast, a standard homeowners’ policy may not cover damage from hail or more extreme winds. Windstorm coverage can be an important safeguard come hurricane season.
  • Flood Coverage. Most homeowners’ policies do not include flood coverage, yet flooding is a common aftereffect of hurricanes. Additional and separate flood insurance coverage can be essential for homeowners in the greater Houston area and beyond.
  • Homeowners Insurance. Texas law does not mandate homeowners maintain insurance coverage, but most mortgage lenders will require at least a basic policy and possibly additional coverage for those who live in hurricane-prone areas.
